ACOG Sight

The ACOG Sight (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) is a reflex optic manufactured by Trijicon in Wixom, Michigan. ACOG sight is mainly designed to be used with the M16 and M4 series although Trijicon also develops ACOG accessories for various other types of firearms which are available in a variety of patterns and colors. ACOG sight is not designed to be accurate on any other weapon, especially not weapons like the AK-47 and Skorpion. Its magnification levels are between 1.5x and 6x. What makes ACOG sight so popular is the fact that it can be used under any light conditions without the need of a battery. It uses an external fiber-optic light gathering rail for illumination when light is plentiful and an internal tritium lamp for illumination during low-light conditions.

During World War II, high quality rifle scopes have been developed due to the advancements in optical technology. The Germans were equipped with optically sighted rifles leading to a magnified and improved sight picture in good light. This gives the German sharpshooters an edge in the trenches. Their snipers were also issued with scoped rifles. Quality rifle scopes were also used during the Korean War as well as Vietnam War. Optical ACOG sight has now become standardized on many of the worlds combat rifles. Austria, England and Cananda are just some of the countries whose standard issued combat rifle is coupled with an optical ACOG sight.

 With growing proliferation of optical sights for combat rifles, ACOG sight was chosen by the U.S. Special Operations among others. These sights are current military issue and are being used in combat in Afghanistan.

Advantages of ACOG sight:

• easy to use a sniper rifle in mid-range combat.
• much faster zoom than a regular sniper scope.
• greater magnification than it’s counterparts.
• no requirement on any battery power and pretty much maintenance free.
• offers much greater hit probability for most shooters, and is a lifesaver in low light situations.
• made it much easier to get off a quick, accurate shot at extended range, and also very quick up close with the bright red four-minute dot.
• provides zooming within the scope while at the same time, giving the user good peripheral vision outside the scope. Much easier to track targets that are moving at long distances.
